Badminton rules quiz

Twenty real situations, most of them drawn on a court. Call in or out, fault or let, and who serves next. Every answer comes with the rule behind it, straight from the BWF Laws of Badminton.

Question 1 of 20Score 0/0
Shuttle on the singles sideline · singles

Singles rally. The shuttle lands touching the outside edge of the singles sideline. In or out?

This badminton rules quiz tests the calls that start arguments at club night: lines, tramlines, the net on the serve, body touches and the doubles serving order. Your progress saves on this device, so you can stop and come back. When you finish, share your score and try again with the questions shuffled.

The rules people get wrong most

"The serve hit the net, that's a let"

Not in badminton. A serve that clips the net and lands in the correct service court is in and play continues. Lets are for things like the shuttle getting caught in the net after the serve has been returned, the base separating from the feathers, or a player serving before the receiver is ready. Every case is in faults and lets.

"It was on the line, so it's out"

The opposite: under Law 1.3 the lines are part of the area they define, so a shuttle touching the line is in. The tricky part is knowing which lines count: singles is long and narrow, a doubles serve is short and wide, and a doubles rally uses everything. See in or out and the interactive court dimensions.

"It was going out, so the point's mine"

If the shuttle touches you or your clothes, it is a fault against you, wherever it was heading. Let it go.

Who serves in doubles

The serving side serves from the right court on an even score and the left on an odd score; the server only swaps courts with their partner when their side wins a point while serving. The receiving side never swaps when it wins the serve back. Step through it rally by rally with the doubles serving order tool.

"The receiver's partner can take a serve that's going long"

No: only the receiver may return the serve. If the partner hits it, it's a fault. And on the serve the shuttle must be struck below 1.15 m, in one continuous forward movement, hitting the base first. All of it is in the serve rules.

Badminton in or out quiz: how the court questions work

The court diagrams are drawn to scale from the official dimensions, with the far end at the top. A lime dot is where the shuttle landed; a blue tint marks the service court the serve had to reach; in singles questions the side alleys are dimmed because they are out. Look at which game it is before you answer: the same landing can be in for doubles and out for singles. For more line-call practice, the singles and doubles rule pages have interactive courts where you place the shuttle yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is the line in or out in badminton?

In. Lines are part of the area they bound (BWF Law 1.3), so a shuttle landing on any part of the correct line is in.

Is it a let if the serve hits the net in badminton?

No. If the serve touches the net and still lands in the correct service court, it's a good serve and play continues. It's only a fault if it is caught on top of the net, caught in the net after passing over, or doesn't reach the service court.

What happens if the shuttle hits a player?

It's a fault against the player it touches, even if it would have landed out (Law 13.3.4).

Can your racket go over the net in badminton?

Only as part of a follow-through after hitting the shuttle on your own side, and without touching the net. Reaching over to hit the shuttle on the opponent's side is a fault.

How high must the serve be hit in badminton?

Under the current Laws the whole shuttle must be below 1.15 m from the floor when the server's racket hits it (Law 9.1.6).

Does my quiz progress save?

Yes, on this device only, in your browser's local storage. Nothing is sent anywhere. Restarting clears it and shuffles the questions.
