This badminton round robin generator builds a complete schedule in which every player or team plays every other one exactly once, spread across your courts round by round. It also does the format club nights actually want: rotating partners, where everyone partners as many different people as possible. Enter results as matches finish and the standings update instantly; everything is saved in your browser, so you can close the tab and come back.
The badminton round robin format
In a round robin, nobody is knocked out. Every entrant plays every other entrant once, and the final table decides the winner. That makes it the fairest format for small groups and the best value for players: a beaten player still gets all their matches.
The number of matches is n(n − 1) ÷ 2 for n players or teams. Eight singles players need 8 × 7 ÷ 2 = 28 matches; six doubles pairs need 15. With an even number of entrants there are n − 1 rounds and everyone plays in each round. With an odd number there are n rounds and one entrant has a bye (sits out) each round, so everyone sits out exactly once.
| Entrants | Matches | Rounds | Matches per round |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 3 | 2 |
| 5 | 10 | 5 | 2 (1 bye) |
| 6 | 15 | 5 | 3 |
| 8 | 28 | 7 | 4 |
| 10 | 45 | 9 | 5 |
| 12 | 66 | 11 | 6 |
If a round has more matches than you have courts, the generator splits it into waves: wave 1 goes on first, wave 2 follows on the same courts. The time estimate multiplies waves by your minutes per match, so you can tell at a glance whether a group fits into the evening. Past about 10 entrants, split into two groups and play the winners off with the bracket generator.
How the round robin schedule is made
Singles and fixed-pair schedules use the circle method: entrants sit in two rows, one stays fixed while the others rotate one place each round, and the facing pairs play. It guarantees every pairing once and nobody plays twice in a round. With an odd number, a dummy “bye” joins the circle and whoever faces it rests. Press Shuffle draw to randomise who meets whom in which round.
Rotating partners (social or mixer round robin)
For a social doubles night, choose Rotating. Each round puts four players on each court and picks partners so repeats are as rare as possible, opponents are spread around, and sitting out is shared evenly (nobody sits out twice before everyone has sat out once). With 8 players on 2 courts, 7 rounds give everyone all 7 possible partners. The standings credit each player with their pair's result, so the player who wins with the most different partners comes out on top.
Badminton round robin template: running it on the night
- Agree the scoring before you start. One game to 21 keeps a round to about 15 minutes; best of three is closer to 30–45. See how badminton scoring works for deuce and the 30-point cap.
- Print or share the schedule. Print gives a clean sheet with every round, court and a blank standings table (A4 or Letter). Copy as text for a group chat.
- Enter scores as you go. Wins rank first, then game difference, then point difference.
- Need score sheets per court? Print badminton score sheets, or keep score on a phone with the online score keeper.
Prefer winners-stay-on to a fixed schedule? King of the Court keeps everyone moving with a challenger queue instead.
Frequently asked questions
How many matches are in a round robin?
n(n − 1) ÷ 2, where n is the number of players or teams. For example 6 teams play 15 matches and 10 players play 45. Each entrant plays n − 1 matches.
How do byes work in a round robin with an odd number of players?
With an odd number of entrants, one sits out each round. The schedule has n rounds instead of n − 1, and every entrant gets exactly one bye.
What is a rotating partner round robin in badminton?
A doubles format where partners change every round instead of playing as fixed pairs. The aim is for everyone to partner, and play against, as many different people as possible. It is popular for social and club nights because it mixes levels.
How are ties broken in the standings?
This generator ranks by matches won, then game difference (games won minus games lost), then point difference. Many clubs also use head-to-head results between tied players; agree your tiebreak before you start.
How long does a badminton round robin take?
Roughly rounds × waves × minutes per match. One game to 21 usually takes 10–20 minutes for club players. Eight players on two courts (28 matches, 14 waves) at 15 minutes is about three and a half hours, so consider shorter games or two groups.
