Badminton court dimensions
A badminton court is 13.40 m long and 6.10 m wide for doubles (44 ft × 20 ft), and 5.18 m wide for singles (17 ft). Tap any line on the court below for its exact measurement in meters, feet and inches, centimeters or millimeters.

Marking out a court? Check it's square
Lay out the length and width, then measure both diagonals corner to corner (outer edges of the lines). If they match each other and the target, the corners are right angles.
Target diagonal

13.40 m × 6.10 m
Official badminton court dimensions come from Law 1 of the BWF Laws of Badminton: a rectangle 13.40 m × 6.10 m (doubles), with the singles sidelines 0.46 m inside, giving a singles court 13.40 m × 5.18 m. The net is 1.524 m high at the centre and 1.55 m at the posts, and every line is 40 mm wide. Every measurement includes the lines, because the lines belong to the area they enclose.

Feet and inches are rounded to the nearest quarter inch. Courts built to imperial plans use a round 44 ft × 20 ft, singles 17 ft wide, which is within a few millimetres of the metric figures; the BWF Laws themselves are metric.
Badminton court size in feet
The quick version of the badminton court size in feet: 44 ft long, 20 ft wide for doubles, 17 ft wide for singles. The short service line is 6 ft 6 in from the net, the doubles long service line 2 ft 6 in inside the baseline, and each side alley is 1 ft 6 in wide. The net is 5 ft at the centre and 5 ft 1 in at the posts (more on that in badminton net height).
Singles vs doubles: which lines count
One court, two games. Use the "highlight what's in" buttons on the diagram to see each case:
- Singles serve: long and narrow. Short service line to the baseline, inside the singles sideline.
- Singles rally: the whole long, narrow court; the side alleys are out.
- Doubles serve: short and wide. Short service line to the doubles long service line, out to the doubles sideline.
- Doubles rally: everything, the full 13.40 m × 6.10 m.
On every one of them, a shuttle touching the line is in. The details, with interactive examples, are in singles rules, doubles rules and in or out.
How much space and ceiling height you need
The court is only the start. sportscotland's badminton design data sheet (endorsed by Badminton Scotland) recommends at least 2 m clear behind each baseline and 1.5 m beside each sideline (to a wall or the next court, or 1.2 m to dividing netting). That makes the minimum clear hall length 17.4 m and a single-court footprint of roughly 17.4 m × 9.1 m.
| Level of play | Clear height above the court |
|---|---|
| Recreational | 6.7 m (22 ft) |
| Competition | 7.5–9 m (24 ft 7 in – 29 ft 6 in) |
| International | at least 9 m, preferably 12 m (29 ft 6 in – 39 ft 4 in) |
Clear height means to the lowest beam, light or duct, not the roof. A shuttle touching the ceiling is a fault, so a low hall changes how you play clears and lifts.
How to mark out a badminton court
- Mark one baseline 6.10 m long. Every measurement runs to the outer edges of the 40 mm lines.
- Set out both doubles sidelines at right angles, 13.40 m long. A 3-4-5 triangle (3 m, 4 m, 5 m) gets the first corner square.
- Check the diagonals with the tool above: both must be 14.723 m (the figure in the BWF Laws).
- Add the singles sidelines 0.46 m in, the short service lines 1.98 m each side of the net line, the doubles long service lines 0.76 m in from each baseline, and the centre lines.
- Posts go on the doubles sidelines, 1.55 m high.
Badminton court vs tennis and pickleball court size
A pickleball court is 44 ft × 20 ft, the same footprint as a badminton doubles court, which is why gyms paint one over the other. A tennis doubles court is 23.77 m × 10.97 m (78 ft × 36 ft), about 3.2 times the area of a badminton court. Full comparisons: badminton vs pickleball and badminton vs tennis.
Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of a badminton court?
13.40 m long and 6.10 m wide for doubles (44 ft × 20 ft), and 13.40 m × 5.18 m for singles (44 ft × 17 ft). The short service line is 1.98 m from the net, the doubles long service line 0.76 m inside the baseline, and the net is 1.524 m high at the centre.
What is the badminton court size in feet?
44 feet long by 20 feet wide for doubles, and 44 feet by 17 feet for singles. The net is 5 feet high at the centre and 5 feet 1 inch at the posts.
How big is a badminton court in square meters and square feet?
A doubles court is 81.74 m² (about 880 sq ft). The singles court is 69.41 m² (about 747 sq ft). With the recommended 2 m behind each baseline and 1.5 m beside each sideline, one court needs roughly 17.4 m × 9.1 m of floor.
Is the singles court shorter than the doubles court?
No. Both use the full 13.40 m length in a rally. The singles court is narrower (5.18 m). It is the doubles serve that is shorter: it must land in front of the doubles long service line, 0.76 m inside the baseline.
How high should the ceiling be for badminton?
sportscotland's design guidance gives 6.7 m of clear height for recreational play, 7.5–9 m for competition and at least 9 m (preferably 12 m) for international events, measured to the lowest obstruction.
Are the lines included in the court measurements?
Yes. The lines are 40 mm wide and part of the area they define, so measurements run to their outer edges and a shuttle landing on a line is in.
