This badminton bracket generator makes a single-elimination (knockout) draw for 3 to 64 players or doubles teams. It places seeds so the top two can only meet in the final, gives byes to the top seeds when the numbers are not a power of two, and lets you click each winner through to the next round. The draw is saved in your browser and prints cleanly on one landscape page.

How to make a badminton tournament draw

  1. List the entrants in seed order, strongest first. Seeds are the top of the list; set how many are seeded (commonly 2 for up to 8 entrants, 4 for 9–16, 8 for 17–32 and beyond).
  2. Draw the rest. “Draw unseeded” shuffles everyone below the seeds into random positions; “Shuffle all” makes a fully random draw for a fun night.
  3. Play and click. Tap a name to send them through. Tap again to undo; later rounds that depended on it clear automatically.
  4. Print or copy it. The print view fits up to a 64-draw on one A4 or Letter landscape page.

Byes and seeding, explained

Why there are byes

A knockout halves the field every round, so the draw must be a power of two: 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64. When the entry is not, the gap is filled with byes: a player with a bye goes straight to round two. The number of byes is the draw size minus the number of entrants. Twelve players need a 16-draw with 4 byes; 20 players need a 32-draw with 12 byes.

A knockout always has entrants − 1 matches (plus a third-place match if you play one), because every match eliminates exactly one player and all but the champion must be eliminated.

Why the top seeds get the byes

Byes reward ranking: they go to the highest seeds, which is how this generator places them. In a standard seeded draw, seed 1 sits at the top, seed 2 at the bottom, and seeds 3 and 4 in the other quarters, so the strongest players are kept apart until the late rounds. In an 8-draw the first-round pairings are 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 2 v 7 and 3 v 6. Official BWF events go further and draw seeds 3 and 4 (and 5–8) by lot into their slots; for a club event the fixed placement is fair and transparent.

Badminton bracket for 8 teams

Eight teams is the classic club knockout: three rounds (quarter-finals, semi-finals, final), seven matches, no byes. With two courts and one game to 21 per match, it fits comfortably into an evening. Add the third-place match so the beaten semi-finalists play again, and switch on the plate so the four first-round losers get a mini knockout of their own. Want everyone to play more than once? Use a round robin for groups, then a knockout for the top finishers.

Tips for running a knockout on club night

Frequently asked questions

How many byes are in a badminton draw?

The draw size (the next power of two: 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64) minus the number of entrants. For example 10 entrants need a 16-draw with 6 byes. Byes go to the top seeds.

How many matches are in a knockout tournament?

One fewer than the number of entrants, since each match eliminates one player. A 16-player knockout has 15 matches, or 16 with a third-place match.

How do you seed a badminton tournament?

Rank the strongest entrants (by rating, club ladder or last results) and place them so they cannot meet early: seed 1 at the top, seed 2 at the bottom, seeds 3 and 4 in the remaining quarters. Unseeded entrants are drawn at random into the other positions.

What is a plate competition in badminton?

A consolation knockout for players who lose their first-round match, so everyone gets at least two matches. This generator builds the plate draw automatically once the first round is finished.

Can I print the bracket?

Yes. Press Print to get just the bracket on a landscape A4 or Letter page (the site's header and text are left out). Choose Save as PDF in the print dialog to share it as a file.
